I just heard about this and I can't believe that if this is really happening why I haven't heard about it before. Seems like a big deal. It appears that MySpace and MTV are hosting a cross party debate with all the top candidates on Feb 2! Can some one tell me if this is real. You can check it our here (http://www.myspace.com/election2008).
From Mashable.com (http://mashable.com/2008/01/31/mtv-myspa ce-debate/)
"Live! This Saturday! At the Colosseum! Hillary vs. Obama vs. Ron vs. Huckabee! That's right, a four-way cage match for the White House! The ticket buys you the whole seat, but you'll only need the edge!
MTV and MySpace are collaborating this Saturday to put on what has to be the most interesting debate since the YouTube-CNN debates. In something generally unprecedented at this stage in a presidential campaign, candidates from both sides of the aisle will join each other in a debate to be covered as part of the MySpace/MTV Presidential Dialogue Series.
This bizarre event will take place live this Saturday at 6 PM Eastern Time, broadcast via radio, online and mobile. The Associated Press will be running the live video feed online. The debate will also be broadcast live on MTV, MTV2, MTV Tr3s and on mtvU, as well as also being streamed via MySpaceTV."
Listen, the Republicans claim that the Telco's need need immunity because it could cost them millions in law suites and they, you know, after all where just doing what the government ask them to do, etc.
So why not say ok, and pass an amendment that limits the damages that can be awarded as a result of any "warrantees wiretapping" related crimes? I don't care if the damages are limited to $1.00 because the point, as I see it, is not so much to punish the Telco's (although they obviously should be) but instead to get at the truth, so we can punish Bush and Cheney. That is the only way where going to keep our rights.
Why not call them out, because even if we loose it will lay bare the Republicans true motives. It's not that they are trying to protect the poor Telco's but they are trying to cover up the crimes of the Bush administration. How then would they argue against it. They could not!
What do all of you think?
I just received this from John Edwards and he's standing up against Retroactive Immunity. Maybe his leadership will force Clinton and Obama to take a position:
"Dear Evan,
When it comes to protecting the rule of law, words are not enough. We need action.
It's wrong for your government to spy on you. That's why I'm asking you to join me today in calling on Senate Democrats to filibuster revisions to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) that would give "retroactive immunity" to the giant telecom companies for their role in aiding George W. Bush's illegal eavesdropping on American citizens.
The Senate is debating this issue right now -- which is why we must act right now. You can call your Senators here:
Hillary Rodham Clinton, (D): (202) 224-4451
Charles E. Schumer, (D): (202) 224-6542
Granting retroactive immunity is wrong. It will let corporate law-breakers off the hook. It will hamstring efforts to learn the truth about Bush's illegal spying program. And it will flip on its head a core principle that has guided our nation since our founding: the belief that no one, no matter how well connected or what office they hold, is above the law.
But in Washington today, the telecom lobbyists have launched a full-court press for retroactive immunity. George Bush and Dick Cheney are doing everything in their power to ensure it passes. And too many Senate Democrats are ready to give the lobbyists and the Bush administration exactly what they want.
Please join me in calling on every Senate Democrat to do everything in their power -- including joining Senator Dodd's efforts to filibuster this legislation -- to stop retroactive immunity and stand up for the rule of law. The Constitution should not be for sale at any price.
Thank you for taking action.
John Edwards
